USDC
Designing the world's digital dollar
What we did
Industries
Crypto is a transformative, industry-reshaping technology — one that has expanded access to financial systems and redefined how value moves globally. Yet as the space has evolved, high-profile missteps and a steep learning curve have challenged public perception.
Within this landscape, USDC — a stablecoin issued by Circle and tied to the U.S. dollar — operates as a trusted and transparent leader. It works within existing financial infrastructure and designed to align with emerging U.S. regulatory frameworks as crypto legislation takes shape.
To reinforce its role as a fully backed, future-ready digital currency, USDC approached Mother Design to reimagine its visual identity. We drew inspiration from the visual language of traditional finance and layered in modern design elements to convey security, utility, sophistication, and trust — helping USDC distinguish itself within a rapidly evolving and increasingly crowded category.

To refine the USDC logo, we maintained its signature parentheses-encircled form but sharpened its edges to harmonize it with the new wordmark.

Our wordmark—a customized version of Monument Grotesk—is understated and sophisticated, conveying the premium quality and trusted nature of USDC.
Aligned to the same visual structure is our wordmark for EURC, USDC's euro-pegged counterpart. With this cohesive structure in place, USDC is able to maintain uniformity and brand recognizability as it expands into new global markets.
Trustworthy Typography
For typography, we looked both to the history of currency and financial institutions, as well as the modern visual language of technical progress. Our primary typeface, Baskervville, became a metaphor; as a historical serif redrawn with modern tools, it reflects USDC’s innovation of traditional practices and standards. To balance heritage with innovation, we chose secondary typeface Monument Grotesk Mono, a technical monospaced typeface that signals progress, precision, and quality.
By tapping into these dual typographic traditions, we're able to express USDC's distinct value proposition: trustworthy institutional backing combined with seamless modern technology.

The color palette is built on a foundation of blue, USDC’s signature color, and complemented by rich green tones drawn from the US dollar. Accent colors are extracted from the dollar’s black-light security strips.

Real-World Art Direction
It was important for us to depict real-world interactions and everyday use cases when choosing imagery for USDC. Crypto brands overwhelmingly showcase abstract illustrations, which can make already complex concepts feel even harder to grasp. Instead, we utilized a custom photo library shot by Joao Canziani to highlight USDC’s practical applications, helping consumers understand the tangible benefits it brings to their lives. The result is a brand that feels real, human, and relevant.

Guilloché Patterns
Guilloché patterns—complex, intricate designs found on currency worldwide—are the inspiration for USDC’s brand graphics. We created modernized versions of these patterns and incorporated them throughout the brand to add a sense of tactility, reinforce USDC’s connection to institutional currency, and enhance the brand's premium feel.

We created a wide range of patterns built from circles and lines to link the graphic system directly to the geometry of the USDC logo.

In collaboration with Cotton Design, we created a generator tool to output customized guilloché patterns, both static and animated.
